This is the ancient parish church of Rugby - although the short 14th century tower is the only remnant of the medieval church.
The medieval church was extended in 1814 and then mostly rebuilt in 1877. The main tower and spire were added in 1894. The new church was designed by William Butterfield - who did a lot of work at Rugby School.

By 1841 the town was growing and a new church was needed. The parish was split in two and St. Matthew's church built to serve the western part of Rugby.
The new church was in Early English style with three equal length aisles. It was designed by R.C. Hussey. A chancel was added at the east end in 1914.
The church has its own web site at St Matthew's
